A traditional jelly-like delight called “loukoumi” made from starch and sugar is a confectionary very popular amongst people of all ages not only in Greece but in the whole Mediterranean region. Traditionally is served with coffee or tea or with a glass of cold water as a welcome treat in Greek households.
This old recipe developed from the pastry makers of Chios island combined loukoumi with the unique Chios mastiha a spice widely known for its aroma but also for its beneficial health effects and other flavors, with rose petals, tangerine, bergamot from the local orchards and almonds.
The traditional mastiha loukoumi upgrated in a playful way replacing ice sugar with rich dark chocolate. The “bitterness” of dark chocolate balances out the sweet traditional loukoumi. A very tasty combination that adds a new dimension to a traditional Easter Mediterranean snack. A nice snack bite enjoyable through out the day.
